Practice one is in the books

Just like that, the first practice of the new season has come and gone.

Every year this gets a little easier, and this one had a difference you could see from the sideline: a group of kids who already have two seasons in the program under their belt. They knew where to line up. They knew what a good stance looks like. They set the tone for the players showing up for the first time.

What the first weeks look like

Early practices are about fundamentals — stance, footwork, conditioning, and the right way to tackle and be tackled. Coaches build up to full contact rather than starting there, and every new player gets time on technique before anything else.

Parents, a few reminders

• Bring a full water bottle to every practice. August in Iowa does not negotiate.
• Cleats and a mouthguard should come with your player each time.
• If your child is nervous about the first week of contact, tell a coach. It's normal, and they've handled it plenty of times.
